Salary and dividends
Owner-directors often take a mix of salary and dividends. Salary is subject to Income Tax and National Insurance; dividends are paid from post-tax company profits and taxed under separate rules, and can only be paid where sufficient distributable reserves exist.
Allowances and pensions
Making full use of available allowances and employer pension contributions can form part of an efficient, compliant remuneration plan. The right blend depends on company profits, your other income and your goals — and is normally reviewed each tax year.
Joined-up thinking
Company and personal tax are connected. Looking at both together usually produces a better overall outcome than optimising either in isolation.
